FAQs

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is the direct application of powdered paint on to a metallic part by charging the paint particles with electrostatic electricity, which is applied by a powder spray gun. These particles are attracted to the grounded part. The coated part is then heated to a point where the paint particles melt, flow and are fused into a high quality uniform protective finish that is aesthetically pleasing and highly durable. Finishes utilizing this method are available in a variety of colors and textures.

What is electrostatic spray?

A coating method in which the paint, either liquid or powder is given an electrostatic charge with a specialized gun and power pack so that the paint is attracted to a grounded part that is to be coated. The paint adheres to the part using the electrostatic charge until the paint is cured. Finishes utilizing this method are available in a variety of colors and textures. This type of spraying can be applied either manually or automatically.

What is the dip/spin coating method?

A coating method of applying paint to parts in bulk by dipping parts in a basket and then spinning the basket to remove excess paint. Baking between coats cures paint on the parts. A pretreatment with zinc phosphate is usually required before applying a painted coating. This method lends itself to many automotive small parts.

What is Barrel or Japanning enameling?

A coating method of applying paint to small parts in bulk by applying paint to parts in a tumbling barrel. Baking between coats cures paint on the parts. Several light coats are necessary to provide full coverage and prevent parts sticking together.

What is phosphating?

A pretreatment on steel parts for enhance adhesion and/or provide additional corrosion resistance for the paint system.

What is a chain-on-edge spindle coating?

A coating method of utilizing electrostatic spray and an inverted conveyor with fixtures to hold parts to apply paint to the exterior of small parts on a machine that spins the parts in front of the spray guns. This application is ideal for deep drawn parts at a cost much less than rack or screen coating.

What is vapor degreasing?

A method of cleaning utilizing a pure distilled solvent by removing oils from parts with a hot wash cycle, a cold rinse cycle and a cold spray chemical vapor rinse.

What is silkscreen printing?

A method of printing lettering, numbers or logos on painted parts usually using epoxy inks.

What is masking and masked spray?

A method for shielding areas from being coated by paint.

What is rack coating?

A coating method of applying paint by hanging parts on racks, which are carried on a conveyor into a spray booth for coating with either an electrostatic wet or powder spray.
